New York currently has over a dozen racetracks and casinos with lottery terminals, this problem gambling is becoming a massive concern. The state addressed this issue yesterday, by stating that it will create a few resources centers for problem gambling in New York. The state announced that the requests for these proposals will provide up to $4.7m per year, for funding for education, gambling outreach as well as treatment services across New York. This funding will include approximately $3.3m divided among the resource centers.
Cuomo stated that this funding will help educate the citizens about gambling addiction as well as help make sure that those who need help will have access to the treatment and resources they need. The centers that are run by the selected organizations will be completely responsible for coordination with the local gambling facilities to provide referrals and information to their patients. Moreover, the funds for the centers will be partially financed by the $500 annual license fees that casinos in New York have to pay for each slot machine and gaming table they have in their venue.
The organizations which are chosen to run these centers will get a 5-year contract with the New York Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. The first couple of centers will open in the North County and the Finger Lakes May next year. If you want to read the full request to run these centers, you can click here.
